On Thursday, November 16, 2023, Recovery Action Network of Michigan participated in a special town hall meeting presented by Wayne-Westland Community Schools and the Northwest Wayne County chapter of Families Against Narcotics (FAN). This event, entitled “Combating the Opioid Crisis: Information, Resources, and Solutions” was held at John Glenn High School in Westland and it showcased available community resources, a special presentation and panel discussion, and a free Narcan training, including a free Narcan kit for anyone who attended. Program Director for FAN’s HARM:LESS program and person in long-term recovery, David Clayton, spoke to the community to raise awareness on the opioid epidemic and reduce stigma surrounding substance use disorder and recovery. Following the presentation, a panel of community members, including a retired treatment court judge, a parent of a recovering individual, a Wayne-Westland school administrator, and a City of Wayne law enforcement officer, answered questions from the audience relating to their personal experiences dealing with supporting individuals in active addiction and various stages of recovery. RAN-MI hosted a vendor table at the event to provide the community with resources to support recovery.
