Celebrating National Recovery Month: Highlights from RANMI’s Participation

September was National Recovery Month, a time to honor the strength and resilience of those in recovery and the communities that support them. The Recovery Action Network of Michigan (RANMI) proudly participated in several meaningful events throughout September, fostering connection, raising awareness, and supporting individuals on their recovery journeys.

Detroit Sober Fest

We kicked off the month by joining the Detroit Sober Fest, a vibrant celebration of sober living. This event brought together individuals from across the region to enjoy live music, delicious food, and fun activities, all while celebrating the joys of substance-free living. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with the local recovery community and highlight the positive impact of sobriety.

Recovery Nature Walk with Passenger Recovery and The Phoenix

In collaboration with Passenger Recovery and The Phoenix, we hosted a peaceful Recovery Nature Walk that gave participants the chance to connect with nature and each other. The walk was made even more special by the presence of Marshall, RANMI’s unofficial recovery pup mascot, who brought smiles and comfort to everyone involved. It was a serene day of bonding, reflection, and embracing the healing power of nature.

School Days Event at Schoolcraft College: Narcan Distribution and Recovery Resources

At Schoolcraft College’s School Days event, RANMI distributed over 70 Narcan kits and provided a range of recovery resources. We also offered education on substance use disorder (SUD) and recovery, focusing on stigma reduction and building understanding within the campus community. It was inspiring to see students and staff engage with the materials and take steps toward overdose prevention and creating a more supportive environment for those in recovery.

Dances with Dirt: RANMI Road Runners Relay

In one of our more adventurous endeavors, the RANMI Road Runners participated in the Dances with Dirt 55-mile relay in Hell, Michigan. This challenging race took us through hilly trails, swamps, rivers, cow pastures, and even patches of poison ivy. The relay tested our endurance and teamwork, symbolizing the resilience required on the recovery journey. Despite the tough terrain, it was a fun and rewarding experience for the whole team.

Apple Orchard Recovery Outing

To wrap up the month, we hosted a delightful Apple Orchard Recovery Outing. Participants enjoyed fresh donuts, cider, and a relaxing wagon ride through the orchard. The outing was a perfect opportunity to unwind, share recovery stories, and enjoy a crisp autumn day surrounded by friends, family and peers. It was a reminder of the simple joys that recovery makes possible.

As we wrap up National Recovery Month and move into a beautiful Michigan October, we reflect on the importance of community, education, and support in the recovery process. RANMI is proud to have been part of these impactful events, and we look forward to continuing our mission of fostering recovery, reducing stigma, and expanding access to life-saving resources. Together, we can make recovery possible for everyone, as we embrace the changing seasons and the ongoing journey of healing.
