Autumn Recovery Walk 2024: Honoring the Past and Inspiring the Future

This November, the Recovery Action Network of Michigan (RANMI) joined forces with Passenger Recovery and The Phoenix Detroit for our Autumn Recovery Walk, a meaningful journey through Detroit’s historic Woodlawn Cemetery. With the vibrant colors of autumn as our backdrop, this dog-friendly walk brought together people in recovery, allies, and loved ones for a time of reflection, community, and celebration of resilience.

Woodlawn Cemetery, a place steeped in history, felt like a fitting venue to honor those who came before us while inspiring those on the journey today. We paid our respects at the grave sites of some incredible figures who have shaped Detroit’s rich legacy. Among them were Aretha Franklin, the “Queen of Soul,” whose voice continues to echo the strength and beauty of resilience; Rosa Parks, a beacon of courage and dignity; James Jamerson, the legendary bassist known as the “Funk Brother”; and Archie Trowbridge, who helped bring Alcoholics Anonymous to Detroit in 1939. Walking among these memorials served as a powerful reminder of the progress that each of us in recovery continues to make, built on a foundation of collective strength and hope.

The timing of the event, held on Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), added another layer of significance. We embraced the spirit of this day as we honored those we’ve lost in our lives and in the recovery community. Participants shared memories of loved ones and reflected on the legacies of individuals who have made an impact on their personal journeys. It was a heartwarming sight to see dogs trotting alongside participants, bringing joy and a comforting sense of companionship to the experience.

Throughout the walk, there was a palpable sense of connection. Old friends reconnected, and new friendships blossomed as we shared stories, laughter, and moments of quiet reflection. This gathering was not just about paying tribute but also about recognizing the power of community in recovery. Each step we took reinforced the support that exists within our network, a reminder that no one walks this path alone.

As we made our way through the cemetery, surrounded by vibrant leaves and a gentle November chill, we were reminded of the beauty in both nature and togetherness. Our Autumn Recovery Walk was a time to remember, to celebrate, and to look forward with hope. Thank you to everyone who joined us, and to Passenger Recovery and The Phoenix Detroit for helping make this day one we will always cherish.
