RAN-MI Visits MSU to Educate Med Students on SUD and Peer Support

Earlier this week, Recovery Action Network’s Executive Director, Allison Herrst, visited Michigan State University’s campus to speak with first year medical students about substance use disorder (SUD) and peer support. Along with providing evidence-based information on peer support, Allison shared her lived experience with active addiction and long-term recovery to reduce stigma and educate future medical professionals on treating individuals with SUD with compassion and empathy. Allison stressed the importance of using recovery-friendly language and how utilizing peers to support patients can help individuals feel supported and understood. Individuals with SUD who engage in peer support services are more likely to participate in SUD treatment, including inpatient, outpatient, and medication assisted treatment. They have also reported improved treatment outcomes and improved rapport with treatment providers. RAN-MI’s efforts to educate professionals on SUD and peer support will continue to bridge the gap between recipients and treatment providers and increase the chance of successful recovery for future patients.
